• Bluefish Limits Cut For 2020

“The number of bluefish recreational anglers can keep per day along the entire Atlantic coast will be significantly cut in 2020 after projections that total catches will exceed an annual harvest limit set by regulators…

• Long Island Sound: With Weather Change Comes Fish Change

“Gone are the lobsters that used to support a thriving fishery, the lobster pots replaced by conch traps. Where it was common in my youth to fill a five-gallon bucket with winter flounder, it’s now a good day if you catch merely one…

“Cod, mackerel, and whiting fishing are merely stories told by old timers on the docks. And we’re seeing the voids they leave filled by black sea bass, summer flounder, northern kingfish and scup, whose centers of abundance are shifting north….”

• Time To Give Striped Bass A Break

“Thirty-five years ago this January, a five-year moratorium on the taking of striped bass went into effect in the state of Maryland. Other states, including Massachusetts, soon followed suit with regulations resulting in a near-total shutdown of fishing for the vaunted species across the 11 coastal states where it migrates. There was no scientific consensus on what was causing the disastrous decline of stripers… The only realistic solution was to stop the fishing pressure from commercial and recreational anglers…. And it worked, beyond anyone’s wildest imaginings. A striped bass population estimated to contain about 4.6 million fish in 1982 would reach a historic peak of an astounding 56.7 million fish in 2004…

“Now in a painful déjà vu, another dire crisis is occurring….”

• Bluefish: More On Revised Limits Coming

“Fishing for bluefish, or just watching their frenzy in the water, has been as much a part of life on Long Island as our farms, beaches, pine barrens and vineyards. But at a recent meeting in Setauket, hosted by the State DEC, there was confirmed what many have regrettably noticed of late: that bluefish have come close to disappearing altogether…

“Some strict limits are in store for how many can be fished….”
