• Long Island Sound: How Valuable Is It?


“Once called the “American Mediterranean” and more recently described as “The Urban Sea,” Long Island Sound is considered one of North America’s most urban yet biologically diverse estuaries. More than nine million people live within the watershed area that drains into the Sound, and at 1,320 square miles in area, the Sound is an enormously valuable asset to, and a crucial economic driver of the New York metropolitan region and the nation.
