• Saltwater Anglers Should Know About Potential Dangers Of Vibrio Infections

“Vibrios are gram-negative, rod-shaped bacteria that occur naturally in estuarine or marine environments. Roughly a dozen species are known to cause disease in humans, accounting for an estimated 80,000 illnesses, 500 hospitalizations and 100 deaths each year in the United States.” [Article 1]

”Fishermen in saltwater should carry basic disinfectant (chlorine bleach mixed 1 part bleach to 4 parts fresh water or tincture of iodine or antibiotic ointment) and apply it if the skin is punctured while handling fishing tackle, bait or fish.” [Article 2]
