“When, in September 1609, Henry Hudson traveled up the river that would eventually bear his name, his ship most likely floated over a swimming horde of striped bass.

”There’s no direct record of that, but striped bass are indigenous to the Atlantic Coast and the species was known to Native Americans and early European explorers.”
