• Housatonic River History: First Flight of the WWII Corsair in Stratford, Connecticut


“In February 1938 the U.S. Navy Bureau of Aeronautics published a request for proposal for a single-engined fighter.

”The first flight of the XF4U-1 was made on May 29th 1940 at the Bridgeport Municipal Airport with Lyman A. Bullard, Jr. at the controls. The rest as they say, is history.”

These fighters were manufactured in that big plant, more recently occupied by Avco Corporation, located on the western bank of the Housatonic near the mouth of the River.
