“If you dropped in at any of the area's bait and tackle shops last week to ask the usual ‘what's cooking?’ type of question, you probably heard some version of this answer: ‘There's bunker everywhere.’

”From Norwalk to West Haven, great shoals of bunker (menhaden to the formalists) have invaded the harbors, estuaries and river mouths. In past years, such an onslaught of bunker would be accompanied by herds of big cow bass and chopper bluefish blasting through them to pick off individuals like ripe fruit on a low-hanging cherry tree.
