• #4: Islamorada Journal 2014…04 JAN [The Rains of Castamere—I]

Yucccch!

Lousy weather! Winds gusting to 24 kts. out of the east plus rain; but, the temps were in the 70s so it wasn't miserably chilly.

What do you do when the world gives you lemons?

You go shopping!

This wasn’t to be a “fun” shopping trip [although for most men there’s no such thing as fun shopping…unless it’s for a new fly rod, or something like that]. This trip was to fill in the blanks of stuff we needed that didn’t get picked up the first time we hit the supermarket.

First stop was for gas. It’s always interesting when out of Connecticut to see how badly we nutmeggers are shafted on gas prices. Hi-test was only $3.80/gallon.

Then we hit Kmart—and Publix [grocery store] where we could see how essential it was carefully to select one’s food if one wished to stay in good shape.

Back at the house we broiled up fresh mah-mahi just shipped up from Key West, and watched a troop of stand-up paddle-boarders go by.

On the way down they had the wind at their backs and zipped past us in a neat line chatting away merrily.

On the way back, however, they faced into the wind, were scattered all over the place, and were kneeling or sitting on the boards to present a smaller profile to the breeze…clearly getting a lot more exercise on this return-part of their trip.

Shoo-Fly rested comfortably at her dock.

Sunday’s weather—east to southeast winds 10 to 15 knots...becoming southwest and decreasing to near 10 knots in the afternoon. Bay waters a light to moderate chop. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms early in the morning...then...isolated showers—perhaps will allow for more interesting opportunities.
