Islamorada Journal 2013…16 FEB

The Jesse James crew arrived here on Thursday afternoon and immediately got into fishing off the boat basin wall.

Jesse landed a needlefish...about which more later on in this post.

James caught a yellowtail snapper...the reason for the name of which is pretty obvious in this photo.

Jesse hooked up with a blue-striped grunt.

And James got a mangrove snapper.

All fish were safely returned to the water...except for the needlefish which met an unfortunate fate:

Jim put the fish back in the water right at the foot of the basin wall. We were watching to see it swim off when a large grouper came out from under the wall, inhaled the fish in one gulp, and dashed back into its hole.

We were amazed as we had no idea that grouper had been hanging out right under our feet.

Meanwhile, in other news...

Saturday: Northwest to north winds 10 to 15 knots...increasing to near 25 knots and gusty in the afternoon. Bay waters a light to moderate chop...becoming extremely rough. Isolated showers in the morning.

Sunday: North to northeast winds near 25 knots and gusty early...decreasing to 20 knots in the afternoon. Bay waters becoming very rough.
