Islamorada Journal 2010...Day 40

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Looked like a beautiful morning on Saturday.

And it was...except, of course, for the wind.

Peering over the edge of the boat basin, one could more clearly see the effect on the water of the winds blowing in from the west, all the way across Florida Bay...

...to wind up smashed against the boat basin wall.

In case you don't have a clear picture of what the boat basin looks like...

...here's a satellite shot that tells the story.

Note how skinny that entrance at the top of the "G"-shaped wall is. Note also the the wall is constructed from very rough coral which, if you smack it with your boat, is going to do nasty things to the boat's gel coat [protective surface finish].

So, exiting from the top of the "G" is not easy under the kindest of wind and wave conditions.

Under these conditions, without another person on board armed with a boat hook [long pole with a hook on the end that can be used to keep the boat away from the basin wall], exiting from the basin could result in serious damage to the boat.

At least one of the local marine weather buoys registed winds up to 31 kts [about 36 mph] Saturday, but the forecast for Sunday is a bit more positive: Northwest to north winds 15 to 20 knots...decreasing to 10 to 15 knots by afternoon. Seas beyond the reef subsiding to 3 to 5 feet. Seas inside the reef subsiding to 1 to 2 feet.

I've posted a brief Movie clip of today’s winds thrashing the local flora on You Tube.

Caryl took off to a flea market for a while. I worked on fishing tackle and did some cleaning on the boat; read for a bit, did some office work.

We had rice and beans and chicken for dinner...good Cuban stuff. Does things for one's plumbing that'd make a camel grit his teeth.

Don’t forget, a saltwater fishing license is now required to fish the marine waters of Connecticut. You can purchase one from your local bait & tackle shop, such as Newtown Bait & Tackle, or at Town/City Hall.
